With many healthy and unhealthy food options available today, constipation still remains part of today’s busy lifestyle. It’s not unheard of for a healthy person to get short bouts of constipation every now and again. Regrettably, often temporary constipation can lead to extended fecal impaction. Fecal impaction necessitates immediate action to avert any serious consequences.

To counteract constipation, you must first look at what you eat on a daily basis. There are many healthy food options available at the grocery and even at fast food restaurants. However, there is a good chance that even though you’re eating healthy you may be getting constipated because of how you eat. Digestion starts with chewing properly, as within the chewing process enzymes start to breakdown nutrients. So, if you eat too quickly and don’t properly chew, you could become constipated.

Of course, food choices are just as critical. If constipation is more frequent than you’d like, you may have drifted toward a diet too rich in either fat or sugar. In this case, changes are in order. What may be lacking is fiber and you’ll be wise to either supplement your fiber intake or add more veggies to your meals.

Proper hydration is a vital component of maintaining a healthy digestive system and avoiding fecal impaction. Remember, coffee and sodas don’t properly hydrate. The main purpose of the digestive process is the increase of nutrients and the reduction of bodily waste. Thus, if you increase your fiber levels you must consequently increase your water consumption to avoid clogging your intestines.

Looking at vitamin intake is a great option for those suffering with constipation, but eating a perfect high fiber diet. Vitamins can actually cause constipation, even if you take them in lower doses. Iron supplements are among the most common constipation-starting supplements.

Colon cleansing is one way to counteract constipation. Before undergoing a colon cleanse, you should consult with your doctor. This is especially true if you have underlying medical conditions. If your doctor doesn’t suggest colon cleansing, you may want try drinking prune juice after each meal.

Children who show signs of constipation should be watched closely by parents. Fecal impaction should not be allowed to develop. Parents can think about the time constipation started and examine their child’s eating from that point on to target a possible dietary cause of the constipation.

A child with chronic constipation should absolutely be seen by a physician. Often kids will swallow small non-food objects and they cause them to be constipated by intestinal obstruction. Obstruction can be life threatening, however an x-ray can show quickly whether obstruction is the problem.
