Do You Know What Could Cause High Blood Pressure

by Michael Blair

High blood pressure (aka hypertension) is that often there are now symptoms. All too often the only symptom is having a heart attack, that’s why a common nickname is the “silent killer”.

Accordingly knowing what could cause high blood pressure is often the best thing you can do. As the old saying goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and knowing some of the known causes enables you to do something about it.

There is little doubt that salt intake has a direct effect on blood pressure. Both this and the ingestion of dietary potassium have been found to have adverse effects on a person’s health.

Overweight people have more of a risk of having high blood pressure. All that extra weight you are carrying around puts added stress on your body. Not only increasing your blood pressure, but putting you at risk for a number of health problems including, but not limited to, arthritis, sleep apnea and diabetes.

Alcohol is another of the things that can increase your blood pressure. Drinking, in moderation, 1 or 2 small glasses of wine, studies tell us, is beneficial for your hypertension. Drinking more than that however, leads to health concerns.

The contraceptive pill can cause the blood pressure to rise so it is important that all women no matter how young they are have their blood pressure checked on a regular basis.

While less common, different illnesses or health conditions (even pregnancy), medications, and street drugs.

Having your blood pressure checked, at least annually, is certainly recommended. Especially if you have a family history of high blood pressure, have other health issues or have a lifestyle that may raise your risk of high blood pressure.
