Herbal Treatment for Psoriasis Can Help With Flare-Ups

by Karina Potthast

Herbal treatment for psoriasis can be an effective way to help reduce the symptoms of swelling and itching. Herbs should not take the place of traditional treatment, but instead should serve as a supplement.

While herbs are natural, it does not mean that all herbs are safe. Some herbs should only be taken in small doses. Other herbs should not be taken by people with a certain medical condition or by people on certain medication. Do research and talk to your doctor before you being with herbal treatment for psoriasis.

One herbal treatment for psoriasis is milk thistle. While no studies have been done specifically about psoriasis, milk thistle is known to inhibit the T-cell activation that occurs in psoriasis. Milk thistle can taken in either liquid or tablet form, but should be avoided if you are on male hormones or antipsychotics.

Oregano oil is another herbal treatment for psoriasis. The oil can be found at many health food stores or ordered online. Oregano oil is helpful because it has antifungal and antibacterial properties. It can be used topically or taken orally.

Perhaps the most flavorful option is turmeric. Turmeric is one of the primary ingredients in curry powder. It is known to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain. Although it is available as a capsule, you can buy the powder form of the spice to use in cooking.

Pau d’arco is good for immunity in general and dermatitis in particular. It can be consumed as a tea or as a pill. Gotu kola is thought to improve broken skin.

More herbs and vitamins to consider for your herbal treatment of psoriasis are selenium, vitamin A, chamomile, cayenne, burdock, bayberry, and aloe.

Don’t consider just herbs to help with psoriasis. Also consider adding herbs that will strengthen your immunity and help reduce stress. Chamomile and St. John’s wort are two herbs known for their calming properties.

Herbs should not replace traditional medication nor a doctor’s care, but herbal treatment for psoriasis has its place in helping to reduce your symptoms, ease your pain, and control your psoriasis.
